AetherSX2 app review

AetherSX2 for Android is the newest Android PS2 emulator developed by Tahlreth. This Android PS2 emulator is still at an early access, meaning it is still being developed further. The development of this emulator app is ongoing with constant updates from developers and inputs from users. Since it is still at an early access, finding small issues is reasonable.

For example, you might find crashes and bugs. So, you are suggested to always save your gaming progress, just in case the emulator suddenly crashes. Tahlreth recommends using Android devices with high specifications to be able to smoothly play games with this emulator. They recommend using at least Android devices with a Snapdragon 845 processor and 4 cores like Cortex-A75 with a score of 500 or more and a single core Geekbench 5.

How to Use AetherSX2

First, you need to install it. You also need to download and install BIOS PS2. Note that the file you have downloaded needs to be extracted. You can use a file extractor app to do so, such as ZArchiver. You can save the extracted BIOS file in a new folder. After that, download the PS2 games that you want to play on your Android device.

You are suggested to download the PS2 games on Coolrom. Choose games with the caption Sony PlayStation 2. Games with other captions are not supported by the emulator. Once you have downloaded the games, you need to extract them. Then, open the AetherSX2 app and tap Next until you are in the Settings page. Scroll down and tap the Fast/Unsafe Defaults option to enable it. Then, tap Next.

On the Import BIOS page, tap Import BIOS. Look for the BIOS folder that you have created and select the BIN extension file from the file extracted from the BIOS earlier. Back to the Import BIOS page and select the BIOS you have just added. Then, tap Next. Next, you will be on the Game Directories page. Click (+) to add the game folder that you have created. Find the folder where you store the PS2 games, then tap Use This Folder.

Tap Allow > Next > Finish. Find a file with an ISO extension and now you can play the games on your Android device.
